American Energy Partners: Helping Organizations Significantly Reduce Energy Consumption
The rising cost of energy has become one of the most persistent challenges for businesses across industries. From office buildings and hospitals to retail stores and manufacturing facilities, electricity and heating expenses continue to rise as demand for power increases and therefore its cost. While many organizations accept these costs as unavoidable, American Energy Partners has built its mission around helping businesses rethink that assumption. Through a combination of technical expertise, strategic analysis, and ongoing research into emerging technologies, the company focuses on helping organizations significantly reduce energy consumption and operating expenses.
Founded by Robert Finn, the company emerged from an unconventional professional journey. Before entering the energy efficiency sector, Finn spent more than three decades on Wall Street as an institutional bond trader. In that role, he worked with major corporations and financial institutions, managing trades that often-exceeded tens of millions of dollars. His career required a deep understanding of financial markets, particularly the complex relationship between interest rates, economic indicators, and bond pricing. To support his clients, Finn developed a disciplined routine of producing daily reports analyzing Federal Reserve policy and interest rate movements. These reports not only provided valuable insight to investors but also sharpened his own analytical thinking. That habit of breaking down complex financial data and translating it into practical insights would later become a cornerstone of his entrepreneurial approach.
After more than thirty years in finance, Finn eventually retired from Wall Street. But retirement did not last long. “I had spent my entire life being productive,” he recalls. “After about a month, I realized retirement simply wasn’t for me.” Rather than returning to finance, Finn began exploring new industries where he could apply his experience in analysis, problem-solving, and advisory services.
Energy efficiency quickly emerged as an area of opportunity. Unlike many industries driven by short-term trends, energy management affects every business and carries long-term economic value. Rising electricity costs and increasing demand for power created a growing need for solutions that could help organizations control their energy expenses. Recognizing this opportunity, Finn founded American Energy Partners with a clear objective: help businesses reduce energy consumption while improving operational efficiency.
From the beginning, the company chose to focus exclusively on commercial and institutional clients rather than residential customers. Large facilities—such as hospitals, schools, warehouses, hotels, and office buildings—consume far more electricity than individual homes. As a result, even modest improvements in efficiency can produce substantial financial savings. According to Finn, “Businesses are focused on running their business. They’re not spending their time thinking about how to reduce their electric bill. That’s where we provide value.”
The company’s early projects centered on lighting upgrades, particularly replacing traditional fluorescent lighting with modern LED technology. When American Energy Partners first began working in this area more than a decade ago, LED lighting was still emerging as a commercial solution. Fluorescent lighting, widely used in offices and retail environments, typically consumed about 32 watts per tube. Early LED replacements used roughly 14 watts to produce comparable brightness. Over time, technological advancements dramatically improved LED efficiency. Today, LED lighting can produce the same luminosity using as little as 11 watts. This means businesses can achieve immediate reductions in electricity consumption without compromising lighting quality. But the advantages of LED lighting extend beyond energy savings. Fluorescent lighting relies on gases that can be hazardous when broken, requiring special disposal procedures. LED lighting, on the other hand, operates using solid-state components and produces significantly less heat. By reducing heat output, LED systems also lessen the workload on air conditioning units during warmer months.
Finn explains that many business owners simply are not aware of these differences. “Most people don’t spend time thinking about lighting technology,” he says. “If a light burns out, they just replace it. Our role is to educate them about what newer technologies can do.”
Education has become one of the company’s defining services. Rather than simply recommending upgrades, American Energy Partners provides clients with detailed financial analyses that clearly demonstrate the economic benefits of energy efficiency improvements. Using comprehensive spreadsheets and cost comparisons, the company shows businesses exactly how much energy they can save and how quickly investments can pay for themselves.
Over the years, American Energy Partners expanded its services far beyond lighting upgrades. Today the company evaluates multiple systems within commercial buildings, including HVAC equipment, refrigeration systems, and other large energy consumers. By approaching efficiency holistically, the company identifies opportunities for savings across entire facilities rather than focusing on isolated components. One innovative example involves ozone-based laundry systems used in hotels and commercial laundries. By injecting ozone into the washing process, these systems eliminate the need to heat water while still achieving superior sanitation. Ozone acts as a powerful disinfectant and allows fabrics to emerge from the washing cycle less saturated, reducing drying times and electricity usage. “Ozone actually cleans more effectively than hot water,” Finn notes, “and it eliminates the energy required to heat that water.”
This ability to work across multiple building systems gives American Energy Partners a distinct advantage over traditional contractors. Electricians typically focus on lighting systems, HVAC contractors focus on heating and cooling equipment, and refrigeration specialists concentrate on cooling systems. American Energy Partners, however, evaluates all of these systems together to uncover broader opportunities for efficiency improvements.
Looking toward the future, the company’s vision extends beyond energy reduction alone. To address the growing client requirements, American Energy Partners has begun helping businesses generate their own power. Emerging technologies such as renewable natural gas and hydrogen may eventually offer even more possibilities for energy independence. While these technologies are still developing, Finn believes they represent the next phase in energy innovation. “Our job starts with reducing energy expense,” Finn concludes. “But once we’ve reduced it as much as possible, the next step is helping companies create their own power so they’re no longer dependent on the grid.”
